What the march means

The Route from Eleftherias Square
to the Old Train Station

The route from Eleftherias Square to the Old Train Station, which the March 16th 2013 march will follow, is symbolic in character.
(1)It was at Eleftherias Square that on Saturday, July 11, 1942, all male Jews, aged 18-45, were gathered at the orders of the German Authorities. There were 9000 men under the scorching sun until the afternoon, suffering degrading and humiliating treatment whenever they tried to shade their eyes or heads. The men at the square were registered before being sent to forced labour camps (road building, ore mining, etc.) for the German technical companies Muller and Todd.
The barbaric slave-like treatment by the conquerors, this inhumane slave trade, has not been recognized by the culprits, even to this day, seventy years later, and almost all victims are not alive any more.

(2) The trains transferring the Jews displaced from Thessaloniki to Auschwitz–Birkenau set off from the old train station.
